No peaks are present but the MSD passes tune

If no peaks appear in your analysis but the MSD passes tune, the problem is probably related to your GC. Possible problems include:

Incorrect sample concentration

Check the sample dilution. If the sample was diluted incorrectly, the concentration may be too low to allow detection of the analytes.

No analytes present

The target analytes may simply not be present. If the analyzer turned off for the solvent peak, then no peaks may be detected.

Syringe missing from ALS or incorrectly installed

In a system equipped with an ALS, if the syringe is missing or not installed correctly, the ALS may continue to function but no sample will be injected so no peaks will be seen. Check the ALS. Make sure a syringe is correctly installed.

Empty or almost empty sample vial

If the vial is empty, or almost empty, the syringe may not pick up any sample. Check the sample vial and make sure it is not empty.

Leaking injection port

If the septum is not sealing, the sample can be forced out the septum. Check and, if necessary, replace the septum. See the user information supplied with your GC.

Loose column nut on the injection port

If the column nut is loose, the sample can leak out. If necessary, tighten the nut slightly.

CAUTION! Over tightening the nut can crush the column.

Injection made in split mode instead of splitless mode

If you accidentally make a split mode injection when the method expects a splitless injection most of the sample will be lost. Make sure you use the correct injection method.
