Averages is the number of profile scans to be averaged for each scan reported or displayed.

Increasing averages helps reduce the effects of relatively slow transient events such as disruptions in the spray caused by poorly degassed solvents. Increasing averages, however, decreases scan speed. Averages is often increased for tuning but should always be reset to the default value before saving the file and using it with a Data Acquisition method. Averages of 1 is almost always used for Data Acquisition.
