Stepsize is the mass step size (in m/z) for profile scans. The larger this value is, the faster profile scans are acquired at the cost of resolution and mass accuracy.

Step sizes of 0.05 and 0.10 are used for most applications. At a step size of 0.05, however, the mass range is restricted to 1600 to prevent data overflow. There are no mass range restrictions on larger step sizes. A step size of 0.15 is very useful for scanning across a large mass range during fast chromatography. Larger step sizes should be used with caution due to the resulting loss of resolution and mass accuracy.
