Mass-Based Fraction Collection (MBFC)

As of OpenLab CDS 2.8 with Feature Pack 2, fraction collection can be triggered by MS signals, UV signals, or a combination of both.

Required components

Mass-based fraction collection is supported with the following Hardware:

Minimum required drivers:

  • LC and CE Driver 3.10

  • LC/MS Driver 3.2

Minimum required firmware:

  • LC firmware version X.07.43

  • SQ-MSD ESW firmware version 12.1

Intro to MBFC and Background Literature

While UV-based systems collect multiple fractions per peak – often capturing everything that absorbs light – mass-based systems collect only the compound of interest, based on its mass. This level of specificity drastically improves workflow efficiency.

Because mass-based fraction triggering is so selective, it significantly reduces the number of collected fractions per run. What would typically require six UV-collected fractions for reanalysis can be achieved with just one when using mass-based collection.
